–The 400cc modern classic roadster specifically made for markets like India was launched on 5th July amid lots of hype.
– Born from the family of the bigger siblings like Speed Twin 900/1200
–Both the Speed and Scrambler are to be manufactured at Bajaj’s Chakan facility
–Scrambler 400X would launch later this year
The new Speed 400 which takes on the likes of the new Harley 440X, Honda CB350RS, RE Hunter 350 and New KTM 390 Duke; is the most affordable and novice friendly of all Triumph lineups. Taking cues from the established modern classics like Speed Twin 900/1200, the baby Speed will cater to customers who are looking to upgrade to a premium brand or to just add a more practical machine in the garage. Being made in Bajaj’s new plant in Chakan (Chakan 2), this has helped in keeping the costs down, making it more accessible to a price sensitive market. The new plant with a total installed capacity of 25000 bikes will also include the production of the Scrambler 400X in coming future.
A new TR series of engine is developed for this platform. Its fuel injected, 398.15cc liquid cooled motor churning out 40hp of power and 37.5nm of torque. A 6 speed manual with an assist and slipper clutch is added, making it a smooth, easy going but a very tractable motor. Make no mistake though, this engine has the authentic Triumph DNA which carries forward from its elder siblings. A good grunt is observed from 7500rpm to 12000 rpm(effective redline at 9200rpm)
The instrument cluster is a well built and neatly laid out unit. Comprises of an analogue speedometer and digital tachometer with various digital telltale lights including ABS and TC on/off indicators. Gear indicator is also present. Coming to the suspension front, 43mm USD front forks and rear adjustable monoshock give you a planted and smooth ride. 3 color options are available (Carnival Red, Caspian Blue, Phantom Black)
